The Exercise Flow
When you start a workout on Gymkee, you go through exercises one by one. Each exercise follows the same rhythm:
1. Exercise preview
A full screen shows the exercise name, a video demonstration, the list of sets with their targets (weight, reps, rest time), and any coach note. If your coach configured alternatives for this exercise, you can swap before you begin.
If there is a rest timer from the previous exercise, it starts counting down automatically on this screen. You can skip it if you are ready.
2. Set execution
The video stays at the top of the screen. Below it, you see the set number (e.g. "Set 1/4"), the exercise name, and your targets. A large button at the bottom says "Done" for you to tap when you finish the set.
For weight-based sets, your targets (weight, reps) appear as text. You perform the set, then tap "Done."
For time-based sets (like a plank or wall sit), a countdown timer appears instead of the "Done" button. Tap play to start. The timer counts down, and when it reaches zero, the set completes automatically.
3. Set feedback
After marking a set as done, a bottom sheet slides up asking you to adjust your actual values. Use the sliders to update the weight or reps you actually performed (if different from the target). You can also tap the comment button to leave a note on that set.
This feedback step only appears for standard sets, not for timer-based exercises like AMRAP or Tabata.
4. Rest timer
If your coach set a rest period for that set, the timer starts counting down. You see the next set's targets and video while you rest.
5. Next set or next exercise
When rest ends (or you skip it), the next set begins. After all sets are done, you move to the next exercise's preview screen.
6. End of workout
After the last exercise, Gymkee takes you to a feedback screen where you can review all exercises, adjust values, leave a general note, and rate your workout. Tap the confirm button to submit your results.
Logging Your Sets
Standard sets (weight + reps)
Your coach prescribes target values. During the set, you see them on screen. After tapping "Done," a feedback modal appears with sliders for each field.
Resistance field: weight in kg or lbs, level for machines, or body weight percentage
Duration field: reps, time, or distance depending on the exercise
If the actual values match the target, you can skip the sliders and move on. The sliders let you increase or decrease each value with precision.
Time-based sets
For exercises with a time target (e.g. 45-second plank), a countdown timer replaces the "Done" button. Tap play to start. The timer counts down from the prescribed duration. When it reaches zero, the set completes automatically. You can also skip the timer early.
After completion, a feedback modal lets you adjust the actual duration if you held longer or shorter.
Entering time values
When editing a time field, type digits and Gymkee auto-formats them as MM:SS. For example, typing "0130" becomes "01:30" (1 minute 30 seconds). Minutes and seconds are both capped at 59.
What gets saved
Every set records two values: what the coach prescribed (the target) and what you actually did (the actual). Your coach sees both in their dashboard, so there is no need to send a separate message about what you changed.
The Rest Timer
Between sets, the rest timer counts down automatically. The duration is set by your coach for each individual set.
What you see
A large MM:SS countdown display with a label ("Rest"). The next exercise or set is previewed behind the timer so you can prepare.
Controls
Play/Pause: Tap the play or pause icon to the left of the timer to control it
Skip: Tap the skip icon to end the rest early. A confirmation dialog asks "Skip rest?" before proceeding
Audio notifications: At 10 seconds remaining, a long beep plays. At 3, 2, and 1 seconds, short beeps play. At zero, a final long beep signals the rest is over
Muting the timer
Open the workout menu and tap the mute/unmute option. When muted, no audio plays. The timer still counts down visually.
The audio is designed to work even in silent mode and while other audio (music, podcasts) is playing. It ducks other audio briefly for the beeps.
Notification
When Gymkee is in the background, a local notification shows the remaining rest time so you know when to come back.
The Workout Menu
Tap the menu icon (top left of any exercise screen) to open the full workout menu. It slides in from the left and covers the entire screen.
What you see at the top
Workout name: The name of your current workout
Start time: The time you began the workout (e.g. "Started at 09:15")
Elapsed time: A running clock showing how long you have been training
Workout notes
If your coach added a feedback question (like "How did you feel today?"), a text field appears here. Type your answer anytime during the workout.
Menu options
Option | What it does |
Mute timer / Unmute timer | Toggles rest timer sounds on or off |
Restart guided tour | Replays the workout interface tutorial that showed on your first workout |
Back to home | Returns to the Gymkee home screen. Your workout progress is saved locally, so you can come back and continue later |
Stop workout | Cancels the workout entirely. A confirmation dialog appears: choose "Stop" to discard or "Back to workout" to continue. If you stop, all data for this workout is cleared |
Exercise list
Below the menu options, you see every exercise in your workout with full details. Each exercise card shows:
Exercise name and video thumbnail
All sets with their target values
Completion status (which sets are done)
Section labels (like "Warm-up," "Main," "Finisher") if your coach organized the workout into sections
You can edit set values directly from this list, even for completed sets. Tap any field to change the weight or reps.
Exercise Information
While performing a set, you have several context buttons on the right side of the video area. Each one opens different information.
Info button (i)
Opens a bottom sheet with the full exercise description and instructions written by your coach. This is rich text, so it may include formatting, links, or specific cues.
Only appears if the exercise has a description.
History button (clock icon)
Opens your past performance on this specific exercise. You see:
A list of previous sessions where you performed this exercise
Filters to view by date range
Set-by-set details: what weight and reps you did each time
Navigation arrows to browse through past sessions
Only appears if you have performed this exercise before.
Stats button (chart icon)
Opens a more detailed stats view with charts showing your progression over time on this exercise.
Coach note (coach avatar)
If your coach left a specific comment for this exercise, their profile picture appears as a button. Tap it to read the note. On the first set, the note automatically slides up so you do not miss it.
The bottom sheet shows the coach's name, their profile photo, and the full comment.
Issue button (exclamation mark)
Tap this if something is wrong. A menu appears with options:
Equipment is busy: Opens a drag-and-drop screen where you can reorder your remaining exercises. Move the blocked exercise further down and continue with something else
I can't do this exercise: Opens a search screen to find a replacement exercise from the full Gymkee library
Report a bug: Opens the support chat
Alternative exercises button (swap icon)
If your coach configured alternatives for this exercise, a swap icon appears with a notification badge. Tap it to see the alternatives your coach pre-selected. Choose one to replace the current exercise.
This button only appears on the first set of an exercise and only if alternatives exist.
Viewing Exercise History During a Workout
You do not need to leave your workout to check how you performed last time.
While on any set, tap the history button (clock icon) on the right side of the screen
A bottom sheet opens showing your past sessions for this exercise
Use the filter tabs to narrow by date range
Use the left/right arrows to browse between sessions
Each session shows the set-by-set breakdown: weight, reps, and any notes
Dismiss the sheet to return to your current set
This is useful for progressive overload: check what you lifted last time, then try to beat it.
Supersets and Circuits
Your coach can group exercises together. On Gymkee, these groups work like this:
Superset (2 exercises)
Two exercises performed back to back with minimal or no rest between them. You do one set of exercise A, then one set of exercise B, then rest.
The preview screen shows both exercises with their sets side by side. During execution, you alternate between them automatically.
The label "Superset" appears at the top of the set screen. The set description shows your position (e.g. "Set 1/3").
Triset (3 exercises)
Same concept as a superset, but with three exercises. The label shows "Triset."
Circuit (4+ exercises)
Four or more exercises grouped together. The label shows "Circuit." You cycle through all exercises in the group before resting.
Section separators
Coaches can add section labels (like "Warm-up," "Main Block," "Cool Down") to organize the workout. These appear as text dividers in the exercise list and in the workout menu.
Types of Sets
Standard sets
The most common type. You have a resistance target (weight or level) and a duration target (reps or time). Perform the movement, tap "Done," adjust your actual values.
Time-based sets
Hold or perform for a specific duration (e.g. 60-second plank). A countdown timer appears. Tap play to start. The set completes when the timer reaches zero.
AMRAP (As Many Reps As Possible)
Your coach sets a total time (e.g. 12 minutes). All exercises in the AMRAP are displayed with a swipeable carousel for the videos and details. A global countdown timer runs at the bottom.
The video area auto-scrolls through exercises every 5 seconds so you can see what is next. You can also swipe manually. Step indicators show which exercise you are viewing.
When the timer reaches zero, the AMRAP ends automatically. You can skip the timer early if needed.
EMOM (Every Minute On the Minute)
Your coach sets a total time and a cycle duration (e.g. every 2 minutes). Two timers appear:
Cycle timer: Counts down each cycle (e.g. 2:00). Not pausable
EMOM timer: Counts down the total duration. Pausable and skippable
When the cycle timer reaches zero, it resets and the next cycle begins. The exercise carousel updates to show the exercises for that cycle.
Pausing the EMOM timer also pauses the cycle timer.
Tabata
Interval training with alternating work and rest periods. Two timers appear:
Set timer: Alternates between work time (e.g. 20 seconds) and rest time (e.g. 10 seconds). Not pausable
Tabata timer: Total duration countdown. Pausable and skippable
During work periods, the set timer label shows "Set." During rest periods, it shows "Rest" and previews the next exercise.
Pausing the Tabata timer also pauses the set timer.
Adding Notes
Per-set comments
During or after any set, you can leave a comment:
After completing a set, the feedback modal appears
Tap the comment button in the modal
A new sheet opens showing your coach's comment (if any) at the top and a text field below for your response
Type your note and tap "Save"
You can also access set comments from the workout menu by tapping on any exercise in the list.
Workout-level notes
In the workout menu, a text field appears for general workout notes (if your coach configured a comment feedback). Write anything about how you feel, equipment issues, or a message for your coach.
This note also appears on the final feedback screen before you submit your workout.
The Guided Tour
The first time you enter a workout on Gymkee, a guided tour walks you through the interface. It highlights each context button one by one:
Info: View exercise descriptions
History: Check past performance
Records: View progression charts
Alternatives: Swap to a similar exercise
Issues: Report problems or reorder exercises
Coach note: Read your coach's personalized instructions
You can replay this tour anytime from the workout menu by tapping "Restart guided tour."
Tips
Check your exercise history before each set to know what to aim for. Progressive overload is easier when you see last session's numbers.
If equipment is busy, use the issue button to reorder your exercises instead of waiting. This keeps your rest times tight and your workout efficient.
Mute the timer if you are training with music and do not want beep interruptions. You will still see the visual countdown.
Leave set comments for anything unusual: "shoulder felt tight," "grip failed at rep 8," "used belt." Your coach uses these to adjust future programming.
If a coach note appears when you start an exercise, read it. Coaches use these for form cues, tempo instructions, or specific setup details that are not in the general description.
Use "Back to home" (not "Stop workout") if you need a break. Your progress is saved and you can resume later.
Common Mistakes
Tapping "Stop workout" instead of "Back to home": Stop workout discards everything. Back to home saves your progress. If you need to leave temporarily, always choose "Back to home."
Ignoring the feedback sliders: If you did fewer reps or used a different weight, adjust the sliders. Your coach relies on accurate data to program your next session.
Skipping every rest timer: Rest periods are prescribed for a reason. If you consistently skip rest, let your coach know so they can adjust the programming.
Not reading coach notes: The coach avatar button with a note auto-appears on the first set. If you dismiss it too quickly, tap the coach's photo again to re-read it.
Troubleshooting
Problem: The rest timer sound does not play
Why it happens: The timer might be muted, or your device volume is at zero.
How to fix it: Open the workout menu and check if the option says "Unmute timer." If it does, tap it to unmute. Also check that your device volume (media volume, not ringer) is turned up. Gymkee plays sounds even in silent mode, but your media volume still needs to be above zero.
Problem: I accidentally stopped a workout
Why it happens: You tapped "Stop workout" instead of "Back to home." The confirmation dialog warns you, but it is easy to tap quickly.
How to fix it: Unfortunately, once stopped, the workout data is cleared. Start the workout again from your program. In the future, use "Back to home" to leave without losing data.
Problem: I cannot find the exercise history
Why it happens: The history button (clock icon) only appears if you have done this exercise at least once before on Gymkee.
How to fix it: If you are doing an exercise for the first time, no history is available. The stats button (chart icon) is always visible and may show additional data if available.
Problem: The alternative exercise button is missing
Why it happens: This button only appears on the first set of an exercise, and only if your coach pre-configured alternative exercises.
How to fix it: If you need to swap to a different exercise mid-way, use the issue button (exclamation mark) and select "I can't do this exercise" to search the full exercise library.
Problem: My values did not save after the workout
Why it happens: You may have closed Gymkee before tapping the confirm button on the final feedback screen.
How to fix it: Always complete the entire flow: last exercise, feedback screen, confirm button. If you used "Back to home," re-enter the workout from the home screen to finish it properly.
Problem: The timer-based set ended too early
Why it happens: The timer counts down from the prescribed duration. If you tapped skip or the time was shorter than expected, the set ends at zero.
How to fix it: After the set completes, use the feedback sliders to enter your actual duration. If you held a plank for 75 seconds instead of the prescribed 60, update it in the feedback modal.
FAQ
Can I edit set values after completing a workout? No. Once you tap the confirm button on the feedback screen, your workout is submitted. Make sure to review and adjust everything on the feedback screen before confirming.
Can I go back to a previous exercise during a workout? Not directly. The workout moves forward through exercises in order. However, you can edit previous exercises from the workout menu. Open the menu, scroll down to the exercise list, and tap any field to change its values.
What happens if I close Gymkee mid-workout? Your workout progress is saved locally on your device. When you reopen Gymkee, you can continue where you left off.
Can I change the rest timer duration? No. Rest durations are set by your coach for each set. You can skip the rest early, but you cannot extend it through the timer. If you need different rest times, let your coach know.
What does the set feedback slider do exactly? It lets you record what you actually did versus what was prescribed. For example, if the target was 80 kg for 10 reps but you did 80 kg for 8 reps, slide the reps down to 8. Your coach sees both the target and your actual values.
Can I add an exercise that is not in my workout? No. The workout follows your coach's program. You can swap exercises using the alternatives or issue buttons, but you cannot add new ones. If you want something added, message your coach.
